b. April 13, 1797, in Bath County, Kentucky; d. 1877. On November 14, 1826, Moffett arrived in Springfield, Illinois, where he taught school and studied law. In 1827, Moffett was an orderly sergeant in a Sangamon County company in the Winnebago War. On January 22, 1829, he married Eliza Gatton. Moffett was admitted to the bar in 1828, and was the first in the county to receive a license to practice. In 1832, he was the captain of a company in the Black Hawk War. Moffett served two years as county commissioner, and from 1843 served as judge of the probate court. Under the constitution of 1848, Moffett was elected county judge for four years. In 1850, Moffett owned real estate worth $800, and in 1860 he was a lawyer with real estate worth $1,500 and personal property worth $300.
